Our Philosophy
We’re called Backyard Kids because we believe in outdoor play, messy play and creating opportunities for adventure.
Following the early childhood curriculum, our philosophy is to teach effectively through play, while following the developmental stages of students and their individual needs.
At Backyard Kids, we create a welcoming and inclusive environment where every tamaiti (child) feels valued and connected. We promote cooperation, respect, and empathy among peers, whānau, and kaiako, recognizing that families are a child’s first kaiako (teacher). By building strong partnerships with mātua (parents) and kaitiaki (caregivers), we foster a sense of belonging and shared responsibility for each child's growth and well-being, supporting them on their parenting journey.
The safety and well-being of every tamaiti is our top priority. Our environment is designed to be secure and nurturing, ensuring that tamariki (children) can explore, play, and learn with confidence.
We believe that nature is a powerful kaiako, providing endless opportunities for exploration, play, and ako (learning). Our program emphasises the importance of outdoor experiences, fostering a deep connection to te taiao (the natural world) while promoting curiosity and creativity. Immersing tamariki in natural settings supports their physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development, helping them become confident, capable, and well-rounded individuals.
Our tamaiti-centred approach prioritises each child's interests and needs, allowing them to lead their own ako experiences through play and inquiry. We encourage creativity, problem-solving, and independent thinking, nurturing a sense of rangatiratanga (independence and leadership) and confidence.
At Backyard Kids, we inspire a love of ako that extends beyond our centre. We cultivate curiosity and a desire to explore the world, equipping tamariki with the skills to become lifelong learners.
